How does EMDR work? While EMDR is a powerful technique, the exact mechanisms behind its effectiveness are still being explored. With advances in neuro-imaging, EEG and fMRI trials have shown changes in blood flow and activation of different brain areas pre- and post EMDR.

What does art therapy involve? Through simple, creative exercises, we'll tap into the power of imagination, metaphor, and spontaneity. There's no right or wrong, good or bad and no artistic skill is required. Your unique expressions can unlock insights and emotions that words may not be able to capture.

Moving my eyes makes me feel ill! No worries! Eye movements are just one of the techniques we can use. Many clients find relief through tapping or drawing. We can tailor the approach to your comfort level.

How long is a session, and how many will I need? Our initial session will be two hours, followed by 1.5-hour sessions. The number of sessions typically ranges from 6 to 12, depending on your history and experience, and what you wish to work on.

Why work online? Online therapy offers flexibility and convenience, saving you time and effort. It's just as effective as face-to-face sessions, and many clients find it less intimidating. I am not currently offering in-person sessions.

What do I need? An open mind, a computer or tablet (ideally with headphones) in a private, comfortable space where you won't be disturbed. Have a few sheets of paper and some colours to hand- whatever you can find at home will do.

How much will I have to talk about things? We'll start with gentle art exercises to explore your history and experiences. As we progress, we'll use visualisations and other techniques that require minimal verbal expression. This approach is ideal for those who find it difficult or distressing to talk about traumatic events.

Fees I offer a sliding scale so people can pay what their income allows. This is a guideline:

  • I run a waiting list for short term, low-cost places for new parents in financial hardship.

  • Careful (if your finances need regular reviewing to check outgoings match the incoming) two-hour introductory session £120, ninety minute follow up session £90

  • Comfortable (financially stable): two-hour introductory session £180, ninety minute follow up session £135

  • Connections (assets and high income): two-hour introductory session £240, ninety minute follow up session £180

How will I feel after an EMDR session? Everyone's experience is unique. I recommend blocking out some quiet time following a session instead of rushing to the next activity. In the 48 hours following a session, you may notice old memories surfacing or unusual emotions. This is a normal part of the healing process. Keep a brief list of anything unusual and discuss with me at your next session.

If EMDR is so good, why haven't I heard about it already? It's understandable to be skeptical. Certainly I was until I tried it! EMDR is a relatively new therapy, but there's now a large body of research demonstrating its effectiveness.

Bessel van der Kolk, author of the bestseller "The Body Keeps the Score", has extensively researched and championed EMDR's transformative power, as well as emphasising the benefits of expressive arts therapies.
